Breast self-check

Four visual moves, then five quick answers. About two minutes, once a month.

  1. 1. Look, in front of a mirror

Shoulders relaxed, arms down. Look at both sides: shape, size, and any dip or dimple in the skin. Then lift your arms overhead and look again.

  2. 2. Feel, lying down

Lie down with one arm behind your head. Using the flat of your other fingers, move in small circles from the outside toward the nipple.

  3. 3. Feel, standing up

Stand and repeat over the whole breast, then down the side of the body into the armpit. Most tissue sits near the armpit.

  4. 4. Check the other side

Same three moves on the other side. Note the date — checking once a month at the same time makes changes easy to spot.

A lump or thickened area that stays there

Change in shape or size between the two sides

Dimple, rash or redness on the skin

Nipple pulling in, or any discharge

Swelling in the armpit or above the collarbone
